Act 1
Episode 11: Separate Lives Under One Roof
Previous Main Story Next
Tsuzuru"Romeo, you're going to carry this family in the future."
Masumi"This town."
TsuzuruEh?
MasumiIt's "this town," not "this family."
TsuzuruAh, damn...
MasumiYou forget your lines despite being the playwright.
TsuzuruYou even remember other characters' lines, huh.
MasumiEven an idiot can remember the lines just by hearing it everyday.
TsuzuruAre you being sarcastic?
MasumiYou're just imagining it.
TsuzuruWhat?
IzumiStop right there. Continue with your lines, Tsuzuru-kun.
Tsuzuru...Okay.
Izumi(Several days have passed since we started doing the read-through, but things still aren't going smoothly.)
(I'd like to go on with the actual practice, but looking at this, we may not have enough time...)
MasumiYou're next.
TsuzuruI know.
Izumi(And the atmosphere is bad because of this...)
SakuyaAh, so-sorry. I'm next.
Izumi(In this kind of atmosphere, practice is getting harder and everyone makes more mistakes than usual.)
All right, that's all for today's practice. We're progressing slowly, so I'd like everyone to practice more on your own.
MasumiBy everyone, you mean just these two, huh.
TsuzuruWho are you referring to?
MasumiWho knows.
TsuzuruYou're really being sarcastic.
SakuyaSorry, I'm the one who should practice more, right?
Masumi*sigh*
Izumi(I don't have any issues with Masumi-kun's acting skill, but this part of him troubles me...)
SakuyaCitron-san, I'll turn off the lights.
CitronOkay.
TsuzuruHey, are you awake?
SakuyaTsuzuru-kun? Yeah, we're awake.
Main Story Act 1 Ch 11 CG.png
CitronHow strange for you to come at this time.
SakuyaYou even brought a pillow. What's wrong?
TsuzuruI don't want to sleep in the same room with that guy. Let me crash here; I'll sleep on the floor.
SakuyaEh? Do you mean Masumi-kun?
TsuzuruHearing his name alone annoys me so much. What's with that guy? He kept turning on me when I was practicing by myself.
SakuyaIs that so? That's rare.
TsuzuruRare? He's always like that.
SakuyaNo. It seems Masumi-kun is always alone at school.
He's popular with the girls due to his appearance, but he's also known to be always ignoring everyone who tries to talk to him.
I was surprised to know that he clings to Director, but I feel like he doesn't have any interest in us, like he won't even respond to us...
TsuzuruNow that you mentioned it, ever since we started practising Romeo and Juliet, he began criticise us more.
CitronI get it! He's a tsundere.
TsuzuruHe doesn't have any dere.
SakuyaI heard that Masumi-kun's parents are usually overseas, so he's always alone at home. That's why I think he's just not used to interacting with people...
TsuzuruHome alone? He doesn't have any siblings?
SakuyaI think he's an only child.
TsuzuruI see... I have a lot of brothers, so I can't imagine being home alone.
SakuyaUhh, I know that what Masumi-kun says is harsh, but I also think he's correct.
I always panic whenever my turn comes, so it makes me wonder whether I'm the source of our lack of practice...
CitronDon't mind it. I don't even mind not having a lot of lines.
TsuzuruBut I want you to mind about it a little more.
And yeah, well, you have a point. All right, should we start doing morning practice?
SakuyaAh, that's a good idea! Let's do it!
CitronMe too. The early bird catches Toku-san[1]
TsuzuruWho is Toku-san? It's "the worm".
Very well, I'll see you guys at the practice room at 6 tomorrow.
SakuyaOkay! We should head to bed soon. Please use my bed, Tsuzuru-kun.
TsuzuruAh, no, it's okay. I'm going to sleep in my own room.
SakuyaIs that so?
TsuzuruI should tell that guy about our morning practice, anyway.
SakuyaI see! I'm sure Masumi-kun will show up!
TsuzuruWe don't know for sure.
CitronThen, we should send a voice mail to Director and Itaru.
SakuyaLet's do that!
SakuyaAre you there, Itaru-san?
...Eh?
I wonder if he's already asleep.
TsuzuruBut I heard clattering noises from inside.
CitronIt could be cockroaches.
SakuyaEh!?
TsuzuruIsn't that the sound of a game con——.
SakuyaIf there are cockroaches, we have to exterminate them! We're coming in, Itaru-san!
ItaruSweet! 10 kills. Take that, you're a hundred years too early to challenge me.
SakuyaItaru, san...?
TsuzuruAh, he's really playing games.
ItaruHm...?
CitronYou're in relax mode, huh, Itaru. Japanese dried fish[2]!
ItaruAh—... What do you want?
SakuyaUh, ummm, we're planning to do morning practice tomorrow. Do you want to join us, Itaru-san?
ItaruWhat time?
TsuzuruWe plan to start at 6.
Itaru6, huh. I'll think about it.
SakuyaY-yes. We'll leave, then.
ItaruGood work—.
Sakuya....
Tsuzuru....
SakuyaHe's a little bit different from his usual image.
TsuzuruIt's not just a little bit.
I took a peek at what Itaru-san was playing, and it's a hardcore online game. I heard that a lot of people from all around the world are addicted to the game.
Citron"Ultimate Weapon 4" is an online FPS war game. Judging that he has that equipment at level 124, it means that he's a heavy whaler. He's super addicted to the game.
TsuzuruThe fact that you even know such a thing means you're an addict too!
CitronIt's a mandatory lesson in my country.
SakuyaSeriously!?
TsuzuruYou're lying, aren't you!?
CitronIt's a joke.
SakuyaAnd here I was wondering if you're telling the truth...
Still, will Itaru-san show up for morning practice tomorrow?
TsuzuruWell, I can't say for sure. He's too busy playing games. For now, let's tell Director.

Notes

  1. The original phrase is "早起きは三文の徳 (Hayaokihasanmonnotoku.)" Citron mistook the toku part for Toku-san.
  2. "干物 (Himono)" is a Japanese slang that is used to describe someone who puts on a different face when they're out of house.

Tsuzuru“Romeo, one day you will become the man who carries this house upon his back.”
Masumi“This town.”
TsuzuruEh?
Masumi“This town,” not “this house.”
TsuzuruAh, shit...
MasumiLook at that. You wrote it, but you don’t even remember your lines.
TsuzuruYou’ve memorized everyone else’s lines too?
MasumiEven an idiot would remember after all these days of practice.
TsuzuruSo you’re just being rude.
MasumiYou’ve just got a persecution complex.
TsuzuruWhat?
IzumiStop right there. Tsuzuru-kun, keep reading.
Tsuzuru...Okay.
Izumi(It’s been a few days since we started reading lines aloud, but things still aren’t flowing.)
(I want to start rehearsing soon, but at this rate, we might not have enough practice hours...)
MasumiIt’s your turn next.
TsuzuruI know.
Izumi(The bigger problem is this atmosphere...)
SakuyaAh, s-sorry. I’m after that, right.
Izumi(When things are like this, it gets everyone on edge and they wind up making more mistakes.)
IzumiThat’s it for today. We’re making slow progress, so can everyone practice more on their own?
MasumiYou mean two of us need to practice more.
TsuzuruWho are you talking about?
MasumiWho knows.
TsuzuruYou’re really just rude.
SakuyaI’m sorry, I’m the one who needs practice, right.
MasumiHaah.
Izumi(Masumi-kun has more than enough talent, but this attitude is a problem...)
SakuyaCitron-san, I’m going to turn off the lights soon.
CitronThat’s okay.
*Knock*
TsuzuruHey, you awake?
SakuyaTsuzuru-kun? We are.
Main Story Act 1 Ch 11 CG.png
CitronWhat a rare hour to visit.
SakuyaYou have your pillow—what happened?
TsuzuruI don’t wanna be with him, so let me sleep here. The floor is fine.
SakuyaEh? By him, do you mean Masumi-kun?
TsuzuruJust hearing his name is enough to piss me off. What’s wrong with him? Even if I’m practicing in our room, he has to comment on everything.
SakuyaI see. That’s surprising.
TsuzuruSurprising? He’s always like that.
SakuyaNo, Masumi-kun always seems like he’s alone, even at school.
He really stands out because of his looks, and he’s really popular among the girls, but he’s known for never interacting with anyone.
I was surprised to see him so attached to Director, but I thought he wasn’t interested in us either—I thought he wouldn’t even bother with us.
TsuzuruNow that you mention it, he started being weirdly aggressive after we started RomiJuli practice.
CitronI know! He’s a tsundere.
TsuzuruHe’s never soft. Where’s the “dere.”
SakuyaI hear that Masumi-kun’s parents are always abroad, and he’s always alone at home. So maybe he’s not used to interacting with other people...
TsuzuruAlone at home? He doesn’t have any siblings?
SakuyaI think he’s an only child.
TsuzuruI see... I can’t imagine being home alone. I have lots of siblings.
SakuyaUm, Masumi-kun’s words are harsh, but I also think he’s right.
I always panic and trip up on my lines whenever my turn comes around, so I need to practice more....
CitronDon’t mind it~! I don’t mind it when I can’t say my lines.
TsuzuruCitron-san, I think you should mind it at least a little.
But, well, I see. Guess I’ll start doing morning practice.
SakuyaAh, sounds good! I’ll join you.
CitronI’ll do it too. The early bird catches Ms. Burns.[2]
TsuzuruWho is Ms. Burns. You mean the early bird catches the worm.
Then let’s meet up in the practice room at 6.
SakuyaYes! We need to sleep early today. Tsuzuru-kun, you can use my bed.
TsuzuruAh, nah, it’s fine. I’ll go back to my room.
SakuyaOh?
TsuzuruWell, I should tell him about morning practice.
SakuyaI agree! I’m sure Masumi-kun will join us!
TsuzuruI don’t know if he will, but.
CitronThen we need to dial the message to Director and Itaru as well.
SakuyaYes, let’s!
SakuyaItaru-san, are you in?
...Huh?
I wonder if he’s already asleep.
TsuzuruNo, I can hear click-clacking noises from inside.
CitronIt must be a roach!
SakuyaEh!?
TsuzuruHey, isn’t this the sound of a controller—.
SakuyaIf it’s a roach, we need to get rid of it! We’re coming in, Itaru-san!
*Door opens*
ItaruHell yeah! 10 kills. Serves you right. It’s ten years too early for you to challenge me.
SakuyaItaru, san...?
TsuzuruYup, he is playing games.
ItaruHm...?
CitronItaru is in relax mode! Japanese dried food!
ItaruAh.... Got business with me?
SakuyaEh, umm, we were talking about starting morning practice tomorrow, and we were wondering if you’d like to join us, Itaru-san?
ItaruWhat time is morning practice?
TsuzuruWe plan on starting at 6.
Itaru6, huh. I’ll consider it.
SakuyaAh, yes. Well then, excuse us.
ItaruCya~.
Sakuya....
Tsuzuru....
SakuyaHe was a little different from usual.
TsuzuruIt was definitely more than a little.
I saw the game Itaru-san was playing, but it’s a hardcore online game with obsessive fans all over the world.
Citron“Ultimate Weapon 4.” It’s a war-style online FPS game. He’s at level 124 with those weapons—he’s definitely a fine addict.
TsuzuruThe fact that you know all this says something about you too!
CitronIn my country, it’s part of the standard curriculum.
SakuyaReally!?
TsuzuruHe’s lying!
CitronIt’s a joke.
SakuyaOh, I thought it was true...
Anyway, I wonder if Itaru-san will come to morning practice.
TsuzuruHm, I wonder. He might be too busy with games. Well, let’s just go talk to Director.

Notes

  1. Fun fact: the term used for the chapter title is generally only used with married couples who are on the brink of a divorce (thus living in separate spaces in the same house)
  2. Japanese Lessons with Citron: The idiom is “早起きは三文の徳,” which means “you’ll gain something if you wake up early even if it’s not worth much (“三文,” “sanmon” = a small sum of money). Citron uses the wrong kanji for “sanmon,” instead saying “the temple gates,” and mistakes “徳” for the name “Toku-san.” He ends up saying, “Waking up early is Toku-san of the temple gates,” hence this translation
