Hagoita Arrangement & Revenge

Backstage Stories
IzumiWe’re home.
Thanks for helping me with the shopping, you two.
MisumiIt was fun shopping together~.
KumonYep!
YukiWelcome back.
MisumiYuki! Huh? Are you making something?
KumonIs that the hagoita[1] from the time we played hanetsuki[2] in the past?
YukiGood eye.
MisumiAhaha. We drew a triangle on Tenma’s face, didn’t we~?
IzumiI think I remember hearing about Kazunari-kun uploading a photo of that to inste.
KumonHe sure did!
IzumiThe hagoita’s decorated adorably. What prompted this though?
YukiI recalled a time I made a hagoita with my older sister when I was little.
We drew on it and made it cute and everything.
I saw hanetsuki was on the list of old games we’re planning to play with the kids in the neighbouring city, so here I am.
IzumiWait, is that why you decided to take charge of the hanetsuki?
YukiThat’s right.
I thought it’d be fun for the kids if I decorated the hagoita all cutesy.
CHOICE 1: That’s a great idea! [+]
IzumiThat’s a great idea!
YukiI heard there’s lots of kids these days who have never tried hanetsuki before, so I doubt they’d want to pick up a plain hagoita.
IzumiWell, that might be true…
I guess if it’s a cute-looking hagoita, then they might feel curious about it.
YukiIf they do, then it’d be worth making for me too. Plus, I can use that chance to teach them how to play.
CHOICE 2: That sounds like something you would do, Yuki-kun [+]
IzumiThat sounds like something you would do, Yuki-kun.
YukiIf you think about it, there are lots of hagoita that are decorated all flashy, aren’t there?
IzumiCome to think of it, the ones used as New Year’s decorations have three-dimensional kimono decorations. And the ones displayed together with hina dolls have peach blossoms on them.
YukiYeah, exactly. Those are purely decorative. But wouldn’t it be fun playing with a hagoita arranged in a similar way?
IzumiYeah, that’ll be fun and unique to the project!
YukiSince I’m going to be in charge, I’d like to practice playing hanetsuki with a hagoita like this before I teach the kids.
And, besides, it was fun playing with the rest of the Summer troupe guys too.
MisumiEhehe, I wanna play again too!
KumonSame here!
Hey, Yuki.
Seeing your hagoita, I wanna try decorating one too!
YukiIn that case, I’d like all of us to play together with hagoitas we decorate.
MisumiI agree~!
KumonI’ll call the other guys over!
IzumiI’m going to put away our shopping bags.
Please let me see the decorated hagoitas once they’re done.
YukiSure. I’ll show you later.
Here you go. I’ve gathered all the materials to decorate them, more or less. Feel free to use them.
KazunariThanks, Yukki!
TenmaSunflower petals sure are hard to cut out…
YukiYou can’t even do that?
TenmaIt’s not my fault, okay? I’m not used to this like you are!
YukiThey’re not coming out well since you’re using regular scissors to cut the felt.
Try using these cloth scissors.
TenmaOh, I can cut them cleanly with these.
MukuYuki-kun, I tried drawing William with crayon. What do you think?
YukiThat’s nice, isn’t it?
I’m sure the kids will love it when you show them.
KazunariIt’s gotta be Mount Fuji on a hagoita, right?
Yuki…Hm, so you can draw this nicely even with a hagoita as the base.
As usual, the contrast between the art and the artist is eye-opening.
KazunariI wish you’d be more straight-up with your compliments, Yukki~!
It’s an original hagoita, so I tried putting my heart into it ♪
MisumiThis goes here…
I’m done my triangle-filled hagoita~!
KumonHehe. Here’s my hagoita with devil feathers!
YukiAlright. Now that it looks like everyone’s done, let’s jump into a game of hanetsuki?
KazunariHell yeah!
Let’s head to the courtyard!
MukuOkay!
Now then, let’s have Yuki-kun who’s going to participate in the project practice first.
KumonRight, the first round won’t have a punishment!
Who should be his opponent?
KazunariHow ‘bout a revenge match for Tenten in that case?
YukiWhy not? I’ll take you on.
TenmaI’m down too. There’s no way I’m losing this time.
KumonAlright, let’s start the match between Tenma-san and Yuki~!
TenmaHm? Where did Kazunari and Misumi go?
MukuKazu-kun and Misumi-san went to the storage room to fetch some goods to cheer with.
TenmaWhat the heck?
YukiI’m sure they’ll be back soon.
It’s fine, let’s get started.
KumonYou two ready?
And… let the game begin!
TenmaThere.
*hits*
YukiYou’re playing it pretty safe, huh? Is it because you don’t wanna lose?
*hits*
TenmaIt’s been a while and the basics are key, you know!
*hits*
YukiTake that!
*hits*
TenmaGuh!
*hits*
MukuThat was so cool, Yuki-kun!
KumonYuki, you’re the best~!
YukiHa!
*hits*
TenmaWOAH!
*hits*
Kazunari“Don’t lose, Tenten!”
Tenma…Urk, what’s with that hand fan?
KazunariIt’s your revenge match, so I was thinking we should go all-out cheering you on!
I’ve brought fans for Mukkun and Kumopi too.
KumonFight-on, Tenma-san!
MukuThese are perfect for cheering!
MisumiTenma, don’t you lose now~!
TenmaUwahh… stop fanning… urgh! The birdie’s getting blown away…!
*moves*
You guys, you’re using them wrong!
*hits*
YukiNow, now. You gotta live up to their expectations.
HA!
*hits*
KumonTenma-san! To your right! Right!
TenmaOi, Kumon! I know, so stop fanning!
MukuAh…!
YukiWhat’s the verdict?
KazunariDrumroll… it’s Yukki’s win~!
TenmaWHY!?
That just now wasn’t support, that was interference! One more match!
MisumiSorry~. We’ll cheer for you without fanning next time.
KumonWe got a bit too fired up…
TenmaGeez, guys…
Well, that was just a punishment-free practise.
I think I’ve regained the hang of it.
Muku…Here you go, Yuki-kun. I’ve brought the brush pen and ink.
YukiThanks. Alright, so it’s Tenma’s loss.
TenmaHA!? You said it was a punishment-free round, didn’t you!
KumonYuki’s the one who was exempt from punishment!
TenmaAre you kidding me!?
KazunariThis was mainly practise for Yukki, after all!
YukiYou heard them. Your face, please.
TenmaAh. Hey, stop that…!
YukiDon’t be a sore loser.
I’m gonna draw somewhere weird if you don’t stay still.
TenmaGuh…
Yuki…There. Alright, the real deal starts from here.
Troupe membersOkay!
Tenma…Damn it, I want a rematch!
Butterflies Among Peonies 2-1.png
YukiWhatever you say. I’ll take you on.

Notes

  1. A hagoita is a wooden paddle used to play hanetsuki.
  2. Hanetsuki is a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton without a net. A common rule is when someone drops the birdie, the other person gets to draw a stroke on their face with an ink pen.
