Backstage Stories
ItaruThen, after dinner for the continuation of yesterday’s game…
Hm?
Masumi
ItaruHeh, Masumi is also coming home now?
It's late, huh?
MasumiIt’s because class ran til 5th period today.
ItaruI see.
Still, Masumi’s a university student, huh…
Time sure passes fast.
At this rate, it’s like you’ll become an old man soon.
MasumiYou’re already an old man though.
ItaruLol.
Being told that in a serious tone hurts.
I’m hooome.
MasumiI’m home.
CitronWelcome back!
TaichiWelcome back, guys!
IzumiSomehow this is an unusual combination.
Did you two come back home together?
ItaruWe just happened to meet in front of the dorm.
Masumi said he was also coming home from school.
IzumiI see.
MasumiHey, what about my welcome home kiss?
IzumiLike I said, I’m not doing something like that!?
TaichiAs expected of Masumi-kun.
CitronHe doesn’t waver, no?
SakuyaRight now, practise for the next performance is overlapping so it must be busy and difficult.
TaichiWho Masumi-kun is playing, is Kurou’s subordinate Tadanobu, right?
MasumiRight.
ItaruPersonally, I’m looking forward to this time’s Yoshitsune and Benkei themed show.
I have a favourite game that covers the story of the Genpei wars, see.
By the way, my fave is Benkei.
IzumiOh is that so.
CitronIndeed, that game is a masterpiece fraught with emotion!
ItaruIf you want to know about the background of that era, feel free to ask me. My knowledge is extensive thanks to that game.
MasumiWhatever… There’s no need to ask Itaru.
ItaruWell well, come on now.
CitronIf it’s the story of Yoshitsune and Benkei, I also recommend “Kanjinchou”!
SakuyaKanjinchou?
What is that?
CitronA Kabuki programme!
It’s a story about Yoshitsune and company who are being chased by Yorimoto, disguise themselves as Buddhist monks and pass through a checkpoint.
But at the checkpoint, Yoshitsune is about to be captured.
Because, maybe the disguise…
They aren’t allowed through, being suspicious and suspected.
It’s a story about how there, they cut through and are allowed through due to Benkei’s exquisite ideas and knowledge.
TaichiWoah~!
CitronYoshitsune and Benkei’s episodes are incorporated, and the two’s master-pupil love is splendid…!
ItaruOhh, Citron is unusually offering decent information.
CitronNoo, noo!
I am always delivering nice information!
SakuyaI wonder how they managed to cut their way through!
IzumiYeah, it seems interesting!
I’d also love to watch.
Masumi...
Izumi…Alright, documents complete.
I wonder if I should finish up around here for today.
*knock knock*
Yes, come in.
Masumi
IzumiMasumi-kun? What’s up?
Masumi…Here.
IzumiThis is… a Kabuki ticket?
“Kanjinchou” is written on it…
MasumiIt’s because before when we were talking, you seemed like you watched to watch it.
IzumiCould it be, you purposely got this for me?
MasumiYeah.
…Let’s go together?
IzumiOf course!
Thank you, Masumi-kun.
MasumiI’m glad… To be able to go on a date with you, I’m happy.
IzumiNo no, it’s not a date, alright!
He wants it to feel like a date, so I was told to meet up in front of the station…
(He got the tickets and such,
So things like this are probably ok too once in a while.)
Masumi
Izumi(…Huh, Masumi-kun already came.)
Sorry, did you wait?
Masumi…No, not at all.
IzumiMasumi-kun?
(He’s keeping silent but… perhaps, is he angry?)
MasumiThis kind of exchange, is like a couple’s.
IzumiThat’s it!?
(Or rather, the time now is a lot earlier than the meet-up time so…
Just when has he been waiting from…)
(…Let’s try not to delve deeply into the matter.)
For now let’s get going.
MasumiYeah.
IzumiIt’s here, right?
These seats seem like we’ll be able to see easily… eh, huh? Masumi-kun?
(I’m sure he was right beside me from just a moment ago,
Where could he have gone?)
MasumiDirector, here.
IzumiThis is… a blanket?
MasumiBecause the air conditioning might be too strong and cold.
I borrowed it.
IzumiT-Thank you.
MasumiThere’s also cushions, you need one?
IzumiNope! It’s fine.
(Somehow Masumi-kun as well, he’s becoming an adult, huh?)
It was really interesting…! So satisfying!
Thanks for bringing me, Masumi-kun.
MasumiI’m glad you were happy.
CHOICE 1: It’s also nice experiencing traditional culture. [+]
IzumiIt’s been a while since I’ve seen a Kabuki but,
Like this, it’s also nice getting to experience Japan’s traditional culture.
MasumiIt was good reference for the play too.
IzumiIt sure was powerful!
It also became a lesson on history, as well as being fun.
Masumi…I want to go to watch other performances together too.
IzumiOf course! Let’s go again together.
CHOICE 2: How was it for Masumi-kun? [+]
IzumiHow was it for Masumi-kun?
MasumiI don’t usually watch things like this but… It was pretty enjoyable.
I feel like I understand why Citron and them are into it too.
IzumiFufu, I see.
MasumiI was happy we were able to go on a date…
And I think this time also became good reference for our upcoming show.
Izumi(I’m glad, Masumi-kun also looks like he had a great time.)
At any rate… Just like Citron-kun was saying, Benkei’s actions, that thought of his Lord, were impressive and cool.
MasumiCool…?
IzumiYeah! The scene where Benkei reads the kanjinchou[1] was especially heart-gripping.
They are suspected at the checkpoint, and to prove it's not a disguise, they are told to try reading the kanjinchou they must've brought thats purpose is to solicit their religion[2] and—.
He reads the solicitation spiel out loud from the scroll that had nothing written on it…!
Then after, the scene after that too—.
Masumi
TsuzuruMornin’.
KumonMorning—!
Let’s work hard for today’s morning practise too—.
Masumi..*mutter mutter mutter*…
Tsuzuru!?
T-that surprised me.
MisumiYou’re already here??
TenmaHe brought a scroll and is muttering by himself.
TsuzuruUmm… What’s with.. that?
MasumiFor her, I’m practising reading a love letter.
KumonLove letter?
TsuzuruNo no, it’s troublesome if such a long love letter is read, you know?
Or rather, that scroll has nothing written on it!?
MasumiI’m referencing Benkei’s scene in “Kanjinchou”.
Director was saying Benkei is cool…
I will also become like Benkei.
ChikageI see… So you’re practising reading a love letter from the scroll in your hand with nothing written on it.. right.
MisumiMasumi, amazing~.
TsuzuruWait, you can’t just become Benkei though!
The role of Benkei is me!?

Notes

  1. "勧進帳" (kanjinchou) is the name of the Kabuki play, and also means a "temple solicitation book" that Buddhist monks used when they were trying to convert others to their religion (see next note). I thought the fact they are the same word was noteworthy so I used the original Japanese word in both instances
  2. They actually use the word "勧進" (kanjin or kange: temple solicitation) here, and the word itself is a Japanese term describing the action of a Buddhist monk who wants to save people and expand his religion (which includes recommendations or encouragements of chanting Buddhist sutras and collecting donations for the building of new temples or Buddhist image statues and their reconstructions). They use the same word in the line after as well
