Costumes Should Be Balanced

Backstage Stories
*knocking*
YukiCome in.
AzumaYuki, do you have a moment?
YukiWhat is it?
AzumaI was hoping you could teach me how to design costumes for my role in the play.
YukiAh, your upcoming play, you play a costumer designer, right? Of course I can.
AzumaFufu, thank you.
YukiDo you want to learn now?
AzumaYes, now would be great if that works for you.
YukiOkay, then. Take a seat.
First you draw the design. I usually draw mine in this sketchbook.
I come up with designs and draw them based on the image of each role, then from there I go about editing the shape, color, and patterns for each section…
I like to think about which fabric I want to use. Then I draw out a few patterns and choose the one I like best.
AzumaI see… It’s easy to understand now that I’m actually watching.
I’ve always seen finished costumes, this is the first time I’ve ever seen so many roughs…
It’s a bit refreshing to get a closer look at your sketchbook like this.
YukiYeah, not many people get the chance to see it.
AzumaSpeaking of… have you decided on a design for my costume?
YukiThe shape is basically done. All that’s left to decide is the fabric and the color.
AzumaIs that so. I’m looking forward to what kind of costume it’ll be.
YukiOh, actually… Azu-nee, do you want to choose them?
AzumaHuh? Is that okay?
YukiYeah, it’s fine. You’ve got good sense.
AzumaThank you. It’ll be good role building, so I guess I can try.
YukiThis might be good, actually. I’m struggling to decide between these eight patterns for your costume.
AzumaHeh, they’re the same shape, but the shirts all have different colors and patterns. The style itself is quite simple.
YukiI kept it simple so it’ll balance well with everyone else’s costumes.
Azuma(Oh, this color and pattern on the top right… I like it. Maybe we should choose this one.)
*knocking*
TaichiYuki-chan, it’s time to go!
YukiIt’s that time already?
I’ll be there in a second. Wait for me by the front door.
TaichiGot it~!
AzumaWhere are you going?
YukiWe’re going look at some fabrics so I can get an idea for the costume budget.
AzumaWell then, I guess I’ll go with you.

YukiThe color of this one’s nice, if I pair it with that fabric…
TaichiAzuma-san’s choosing the color and pattern of his costume this time, right?
What about this one for your role!?
AzumaThat fabric’s awfully flashy…
YukiStupid dog, do you seriously think Azu-nee would wear that?
TaichiUuu, I guess you’re right…
AzumaFufu, that seems more like something Puppy-kun would wear.
YukiLet’s check out the shelves over there.
TaichiOkay!
Azuma(…Huh, this fabric…)
(It’s similar to the rough design I liked before in the sketchbook. It’s my favorite color, so I think I’ll choose this.)
YukiOh, this fabric would look great as Guy’s vest.
…Yep, the thickness is just right too, I’m using it. Taichi, make a note of the cost and the fabric number.
TaichiOkay~!
The white shirt’s gonna be pre-made, right?
YukiThat’s fine. But if we can find some good fabric, I want to make the pants from scratch.
TaichiGot it!
Azuma(So this is how he always chooses the fabric for our costumes…)
Yuki…Alright, I think that’s everything.
Azuma(Hmm… Since we came together, I was able to see the fabrics for everyone else’s costumes…)
(Considering that, the fabric I like might not stand out well once I’m on stage with everyone else.)
YukiWhat about you, Azu-nee? Did you see anything you liked?
AzumaActually, there was one I thought would be good…. But I’ll have to think about it again.
YukiThat’s okay. Pick whatever you think is best.
AzumaThank you. Well, I’ll go skim around.
TaichiI’ll help you!
Azuma…Oh, this….
….Yes. This one’s good.
YukiThis one… the thickness works, so there’s no problem.
AzumaFufu, good to hear.
TaichiSuch a pretty color! But, Azuma-san, that doesn’t really seem like something you’d normally choose?
AzumaWhen I was watching Yuki pick the fabrics for everyone else, I thought about how it would be standing on stage with everyone in costume…
I figured this color and pattern would be the best fit for my role.
Yuki!
TaichiThat’s the same way Yuki-chan thinks!
AzumaReally?
YukiYeah, I thought the exact same thing.
I knew asking Azu-nee was a good idea. Taichi, make a note of the price and the fabric number.
TaichiOkay~!
AzumaThank you. I’m looking forward to Yuki’s hands turning this fabric into a wonderful costume.
YukiLeave it to me.
Azuma(Like the thickness Yuki checked by touching it with his own hands…)
(The role, the actor, the stage, everything…. There’s so many things to consider when designing a costume.)
(I’ll do my best to be aware of such designers in my performance.)
