An era where advancements in steam engines have led to them becoming the foundation of everyday life.
In a small workshop in the back alley of a certain country, the young man opened his eyes. |
|
Luke | I've finally done it...... |
You're my first friend, S.
S | Friend? Master? You're my friend, Master? |
Luke | That's right, S. Let's shake hands. |
S | ? |
Luke | This is a human greeting. |
Colt | Hello, Sir! Huh? |
Did you get a new student?
Luke | Hey, Colt. This is S. |
He's my friend. | |
Colt | Ehh!? |
You've got friends when it's normal for you to hole yourself up and not talk to anyone for a month!?
Luke | How rude. |
Even I have at least one friend.
S | Friend. |
Colt | Hello, S. I'm Colt! |
Nice to meet you! | |
S | Yes. |
Colt | Owowowow! My hand's going to break!! |
S | Handshake. |
Luke | That's too much power, S. |
S is stronger than a human, and breaks everything he touches. Luke patiently teaches him how to live. |
|
Colt, who calls admires Luke and calls him 'Sir', also treats S kindly. S gradually takes on more human mannerisms, and becomes able to conduct himself like a regular person. |
|
Yet no matter what, he is unable to understand human emotions.
Luke | My goodness! This precious mechanical doll is...... |
S! Why did you break it? | |
S | What are you sad about, Luke? |
If it's broken, can't you just fix it?
Luke | Do you not even understand that!? |
That's not the problem! Why don't you understand.
I've had it! | |
Unless he is ordered to do something, S won't move, not even to act as a friend. This irritates Luke. |
|
As distance begins to grow between them, S feels a slight pain in his chest, but he doesn't understand why. |
|
Then, Luke's master, Boyd, makes an unexpected visit. He cautions Luke: |
|
Boyd | In spite of the risk, |
that doll is still something you want?
Luke | He's my friend. He's not a doll. |
Please stop talking like that, Master.
Boyd | My my. Rather than alchemy, |
I should have taught you how to make friends.
Well, it's too late now. Lately, the guards have strengthened their watch,
so be careful. | |
Hearing that the guards have strengthened their watch from Boyd, Luke tells S not to go outside. |
|
As Boyd had warned, the guards were starting to crack down on mechanical dolls in town. |
|
Alf | In our country, |
machines which use artificial intelligence with an emotional component are against the law.
Colt | Sir! The troops are coming! |
Hurry and hide S! | |
S | Hide? Why? |
Luke | S isn't a machine. |
Part of him is wind-up clockwork,
but he's a genuine person.
But this world won't acknowledge you as human.
Alf | A mechanical doll is still a machine. |
Putting it on the same level as a human being is in itself human vanity.
Machines are incompatible with humans.
If we try to confuse the two, disaster with certainly come of it someday.
The law exists to protect against that.
Luke | Have I been making S out to be my friend |
for the sake of my own ego......?
As the guards strengthen their crackdown, Luke, who has gone out to town, is caught up in an incident. |
|
S | Luke! Watch out! |
Luke | ! |
Luke | It's no good, S. Stop. |
Your true identity will be exposed!
This is an order! | |
S | I won't listen to your order. |
I want to help you, Luke.
Alf | Everyone into position! |
Retrieve that mechanical doll now!
Luke | Please stop! S isn't a machine! |
He won't cause harm to anybody!
Soldier | Mechanical doll, play nice. |
Gwah―― | |
Colt | S! Pick up Sir and run away! |
While saving Luke, who had been caught up in an incident, S is injured, exposing the coils and springs inside him! |
|
Found by the guard, they are about to be caught, but are able to escape thanks to Colt's quick-wittedness. |
|
Colt | It should be fine now that you've come this far. |
Luke | Thanks, Colt. |
But we can't stay in this town anymore.
S! Let's leave town together!
S | Luke......I...... |
As Luke tries to leave town with S, S takes his own key, saying he wants to stop working. |
|
Luke | I don't want to break you. |
S | Even if I can't move, |
I will always be your friend.
Luke | To be created and destroyed on a human's whim; |
it's too unfair. | |
S | We'll be able to meet again, someday. |
I am also sad to say goodbye.
But when I think that we can meet again, I'm okay.
Luke | Thank you, S. |
Someday, the time will surely come when I will be able to wake you again.
Until then, sleep well.
S | Until the day we meet again... |
After Luke stops S from functioning, he often went outside, though he had previously shut himself in, and could be seen interacting with the townspeople. |
|
And he always had a necklace hung from his neck at his chest.
Colt | Hello, Sir! |
Huh? Sir, you're wearing an oddly-shaped necklace.
It looks like a key. | |
Luke | This is an important key. |
I keep it so it won't get lost. |
