Salaryman Kota Seo is entering his third year of employment. On his way home from work, he encounters a man who has collapsed. |
|
Kota | Hey, are you drunk? |
You’ll catch a cold if you sleep in a place like this.
Reo | ...Ugh. |
Kota | Geez, it can’t be helped. |
My place is nearby so I can take you there.
But you leave as soon as you wake up, okay?
The next morning, the man who had collapsed introduced himself as Reo Kuto.
Kota | *yawn* That was a good sleep. |
Reo | Good morning. Thank you for taking care of me yesterday. |
I was careless to have collapsed on the roadside.
Kota | Did you make all this? |
Reo | I just made it from whatever I could find in the fridge, so it’s nothing grand. |
It’s a thank you for giving me a meal and a place to spend the night.
Kota | The place is all clean now too... |
Wow. From where did a wife like you come from?
Reo | I’ve lived a pretty long life, but I’ve never been a wife before. |
Kota | I’m Kota Seo. You are? |
Reo | I’m Reo... Reo Kuto. |
Kouta | Reo, huh. Nice to meet you. |
Reo | Come, eat up before it gets cold. |
Kota | If you’ve got nowhere else to go, I don’t mind if you stay here for a while. |
Reo | You’d let a guy you don’t even know stay at your place? |
Kota | Don’t say that yourself. |
When I first came here from the countryside, I also had nothing so I went through a lot.
At times like this, we should help each other out.
Reo | How kind of you. |
Kota | Hm? You’re not eating? |
Reo | I eat during irregular hours. |
Don’t worry about me; go on and eat.
Kota | I’ll help myself then. Thank you for the meal. |
The next morning, the man who calls himself Reo Kuto does all the housework flawlessly as a token of his gratitude.
Moved by the fact that Reo has no other place to go, Kota ends up taking him in.
But ever since Reo started living with him, Kota began to have nightmares everyday.
Nonomiya | Hey, Seo. |
I heard you took in some guy who was collapsed on the street?
That’s way too suspicious.
Nowadays you only find that type of stories in dramas and manga for people nearing their 30s.
Kota | He’s a good guy. Looked like he was troubled. |
So I couldn’t leave him alone.
Nonomiya | *sigh*... You’ll get in trouble someday if you keep saying stuff like that. |
Manager | Good morning, Seo-san. |
Kota | Good morning. |
Izumi | Good morning. It’s nice out today, isn’t it? |
Kota | Good morning. |
Izumi | By the way, Seo-san. |
Have you been taking days off recently?
Kota | Huh? |
Izumi | It’s just that sometimes I hear sounds next door during the day on weekdays... |
I was wondering what to do if it was a thief.
Kota | Oh, I have a friend staying over for a little while. |
Izumi | Is that so? |
His neighbour Izumi worries for him, and his colleague Nonomiya points out that he looks pale.
After hearing the whole story, Nonomiya warns Kota that Reo is a suspicious character. But Kota can’t bring himself to make Reo, who has been doing housework so diligently, leave; and so they continue to live together.
One night when Kota is having one of his usual nightmares, he sees Reo covered in blood.
When he casually talks to Reo about it thinking that it must have been part of his dream, Reo makes a sad expression.
Franz | To think that I’d meet someone of the same kind in a place like this. |
Reo | It became convenient here recently. |
It’s not so uncommon. | |
Kota | Reo! |
Reo | ―― |
Franz | Looks like you’ve found a nice bed. |
Reo | He has nothing to do with it. |
Kota | Heeey, Reo! |
Reo | ―― |
Franz | We’re acquainted now. |
Might as well get along.
Reo | I have no intention of getting friendly. |
Kota | What’s up with him... |
Nonomiya | Is that the freeloader? |
I knew it, he’s got to be suspicious.
Probably part of a crime syndicate or something.
Kota | He’s not that kind of guy... |
But I wonder why he ignored me.
Kota spotted Reo talking to a foreign-looking man. When Kota called out to Reo, Reo promptly left. Nonomiya warns a puzzled Kota once again. |
|
That night, Reo tells Kota that he’s moving out.
Reo | I was in your care for a long time. |
I didn’t mean to overstay, but it just felt so comfortable here.
Kota | You don’t have to be in such a hurry to leave. |
You helped me out too, after all.
Reo | That’s not true. |
Kota | Have you decided on a place to live? |
Reo | Yeah, more or less. |
Kota | Tell me your contact information. |
Reo | I’ll tell you when things have settled. |
Kota | Okay. I’m glad you found a place. |
Reo | I’m really grateful to you. Thank you. |
Kota | You’re leaving now? |
Who leaves at this hour?
Do it tomorrow morning.
Reo | ...Right. |
Kota | To celebrate your fresh start, let’s drink the night away. |
Reo thanks Kota for taking him in. Kouta is sad to see him go, but he doesn’t stop Reo.
The next morning when Kota is about to see Reo off, they happen to meet Izumi by the doorway.
While making small talk, it’s brought up that Reo is moving out; and then, as if remembering something, Izumi returns to his own room to retrieve a farewell gift.
Izumi | I’m sorry for the wait. |
Here’s a farewell gift from me.
We were neighbours after all, if only for a short while.
Reo | Thank you for going out of your way— |
Izumi | —Wishing for a bright future. |
Reo | —Gh. |
Kota | Huh... Reo? |
Reo | —Could it be that you’re... |
Izumi | I didn’t realize one would be this close. |
Kota | What are you doi— |
Reo | —Run, Kota. |
Kota | What the hell are you saying, with a serious injury like that!? |
Izumi | You can still move? |
Kota | Stop!! |
Izumi | Seo-san, please don’t interfere. |
―― | |
Franz | Oh dear. |
Izumi | —!? Reinforcements? |
Franz | I thought I might as well partake in this meal. |
But I ended up drawing the short end of the stick.
Izumi | —Guh. |
Franz | You still want to fight? |
I’m not as lenient as that other guy.
Izumi | —Tch. |
Kota | Reo, are you okay!? Reo!! |
Franz | Can you entrust that guy to me? |
Kota | You were the one with Reo the other day— |
Franz | We’re of the same kind. |
Kota | Can you really save him? |
Franz | Probably. |
Kota | ...Fine. I’ll leave Reo to you. |
Franz | How obedient. Good boy. |
Kota | But promise that he’ll come back and explain everything to me. |
Franz | Fine. I’ll tell him. |
We’ve been exposed so we can’t stay here anymore.
The headquarters would’ve already been informed.
The next one will come soon.
Reo | What did we ever do? |
Just because we’re able to live longer than humans...
Franz | Heresy eliminates. |
It’s been done over and over again since ancient times.
That’s what we call human nature.
Reo escapes death by drinking blood. After regaining his strength, he visits Kota. Reo reveals that he’s a vampire, and that he had been drinking Kota’s blood every night. |
|
And then, he tells Kota that he will be leaving again.
Reo | This is goodbye, Kota. I’m glad I met you. |
Kota | I know about your circumstances now. |
There’s no need for you to leave, is there?
Reo | If I stay here, you’ll get involved too. |
I can now believe that there’s meaning to this tedious life as long as humans like you exist.
Thank you. | |
Kota | Wait! Are you planning to collapse out on the street by yourself again? |
Reo | I’ll be careful. |
Kota | Are you going to keep moving from place to place while spending the rest of your life on your own? |
Reo | That’s our fate. |
Kota | ...Then take me with you. |
Reo | What— |
Kota | I’m saying that I’ll be your companion. |
I’ll become anything, even a vampire.
Reo | ...Thank you, Kouta. Just by hearing those words from you, I— |
I... | |
Kota | Reo...? |
You’re biti— | |
Reo | Good night... and sweet dreams. |
Kota | ...――Re...o. |
Reo | Goodbye... |
Kota tries to stop Reo from leaving again. He tells him that he’ll become Reo’s companion – that he’ll become a vampire. Reo bites the nape of Kota’s neck while conveying words of gratitude. |
|
The next morning, Kota gets woken up by Nonomiya, who came over because he was worried about Kota not showing up for work. Reo is nowhere to be found inside the room, and not a single trace of him remains. |
|
Nonomiya | Hey, you can’t be dead, right!? |
Seo!? | |
Kota | Nn... |
Nonomiya | What, so you just slept in. |
You didn’t show up at work so I got worried.
Kota | Slept in... |
Nonomiya | What’s wrong? |
Kota | Where’s Reo...? |
Nonomiya | Oh, now that you mention it. |
Did that freeloader finally leave?
Kota | ...Yeah, he left me behind. |
Nonomiya | Huh? What are you saying? |
Kota | ―― |
Nonomiya | Hey, Seo. You all right? |
