--Film No. 03: Sakyo Furuichi--
SakyoAt first, I thought it was like watching my past self.
Back when I first encountered MANKAI Company; when I first encountered theater—.
I was just so happy to be a part of practice, to be acting....
To be able to learn and absorb all sorts of things.
I just wanted to do theater forever.
I thought he was just like my past self; when I was a little kid.
But....
During “A Tale of Chivalry” he mentioned the word “love.”
That’s a word that the past me was just too embarrassed to face.
Omi...Love?
Sakyo—Cut that part.
The point is, he had a bigger heart than my past self.
Because I was more of a shitty brat like Settsu.
OmiWhat does Hyodo Juza lack as an actor?
SakyoHe needs to work on enunciation and speech. He has the basics down but he doesn’t know how to apply them.
He’s slow on the uptake. It takes him time to get into role. He’s really bad at ad libs.
OmiStrict as always... Last question. What do you respect about him?
Sakyo—Pfft.
IzumiWow, this Japanese sake is mellow and delicious.
SakyoNot bad.
YuzoStop being cheeky.
SakyoSo, what’s the tale?
YuzoOh, right. So one of my old friends does a workshop at Amabi once in a while.
Izumi(A workshop at Amabi? Don’t tell me....)
YuzoHis name is Makino. I heard Juza and Banri are both learning from him.
Izumi(Thought so....)
YuzoWe went drinking recently, and he told me all about them.
He was amused; he said Juza and Banri are miraculously complete opposites as actors: both in terms of talent, and in terms of what they’re pursuing.
Apparently Banri has been saying for a while that he wants to become more absorbed in his role, as if he were one with it, but....
Juza, on the other hand, wants to become a level-headed actor who can analyze his surroundings and perform any role that comes his way.
They’re both asking for the impossible.
IzumiYou’re right....
YuzoBanri knew from the start how to present himself as an actor to the audience. He immediately gets a hold of the situation and calmly controls his performance.
He probably doesn’t think about it; it’s his natural talent.
IzumiBut that’s why he’s constantly calculating on the stage; he can’t get completely absorbed in his role.
YuzoYeah.
On top of that, he hasn’t shown any interest in others up till now, so he has a hard time digging into his character’s feelings.
Meanwhile, Juza is clumsy; he doesn’t have energy to spare when he’s on stage, and his field of view is narrow. He can’t calmly control his acting the way Banri can.
But because he always wanted to become someone besides himself, he shows a powerful interest in others. That includes envy and jealousy.
IzumiWhen he’s acting, that becomes a powerful source of understanding and empathizing with his role.
YuzoYeah. He respects others; he respects his role, and he feels pure joy at being able to perform their life.
SakyoThey’re such complete opposites that it’s hilarious.
YuzoThat’s why they subconsciously respect and envy the other for what they each lack as actors.
SakyoThey’re way too lucky.
YuzoOh, yeah. Back when I saw Juza during practice for your debut performance, I thought he was like you when you were younger.
Sakyo....
YuzoMaybe if you also had a rival you’d rather die than lose to, you would have kept acting instead of going astray.
SakyoLeave me alone.
Yuzo—Guess it’s time for me to go.
IzumiTake care.
SakyoMake sure you don’t get caught by the police for wandering around at night.
YuzoI’m not you.
IzumiGood night.
YuzoYeah. Good night.
SakyoYou should go to bed too. At this rate you’re going to sleep through tomorrow’s morning practice.
IzumiWe’re showing the video tomorrow, right? I’m looking forward to everyone’s interviews.
SakyoIt’s definitely an idea Fushimi would come up with. Hopefully this performance will have a good influence on him, too.
IzumiYou’re right.
