Student AMan. He's late again.
Student BHe's very popular. He's probably busy.
Student AOh, right, Settsu. Handsome Detective is trending, right? My friend asked me about you.
Student BMan, I'm jealous. You're good-looking, tall, and you don't look out of place at all when standing side by side with other actors.
Student AAre you going to star in more drama series now?
BanriNope. Theater is still my top priority.
Student BSay what, dude!? What a waste, really, after going viral like that.
*door opens*
Kabuto
LecturerKabuto-san, good morning.
Kabuto…Let's begin.
Banri(He didn't give me any comments today either. It's not like he's ignoring me, but man, this kinda pisses me off.)
Can you give me some advice?
Kabuto…You again? You did well. You don’t need any advice.
'Sides, did you really take my words seriously and move to drama production?
BanriYou saw that?
KabutoI just happened to watch it.
I always watch other people's performances whenever I have time. Like movies, drama series, or theater productions. I watch them randomly.
Banri…I just tried it to find out why theater is my only option. It ain't like I considered movin' to on-screen production for real.
KabutoSo what's your answer?
Banri…Both the staff and the actors employ different techniques from those in theater. I personally think they're amazing, but it didn't move me as much as theater does.
But I still don't know if that reason is clear enough.
KabutoHeh. Good luck on your self-discovery, then. That's all for my advice.
Banri--.
Wait. There's something I'd like to ask you.
Why are you also working as a director, aside from being an actor?
If we put it this way, "It doesn't have to be theater" is like "It doesn't have to be acting" for you, no?
Kabuto…Hmph. It ain't like I wanted to be a director in the first place. It's just some sort of insurance for me.
Let's say, what if I get injured so bad I can't move my legs? What if I can't deliver my lines properly?
Indeed, I can still go on stage if we do something about it.
But it'll be hard to continue working as an actor at Hyakka Troupe.
Still, I can't live apart from theater. So I came up with a back-up plan to survive.
I'm different from people like you who are good at everything--people who have choices.
Kabuto Amadate's whole identity is just theater. …That's all.
I have no freakin' reason. Damn, I don't even have a choice in the first place. I can only live like this 'cause I can't even choose.
To me, seeing you search for a reason why you're doing theater is like seeing you go on a carefree journey of self-discovery.
Banri(Theater defines your whole identity? What did he mean by "I don't have a choice"…?)
KabutoWell, ever since I started working as a director, my perspective as an actor has expanded dramatically. It does have that kind of merit.
But as long as I still have what it takes to be an actor, I'm not going to just stick to directing only. That's all.
*walks away*
Banri
("My perspective as an actor has also expanded," huh…)
(I'm nothing but a "boring actor" to Director Kabuto Amadate. Will I understand the reason if I try to look at it from a director's point of view…?)
