Episode 12: The Essence of Art

HomareOh. This is…
AzumaWhat a beautiful painting.
Banri(…Never would I have thought they'd bring me to an art gallery when I asked them why they're doing theater.)
AzumaSorry for making you come with us.
BanriIt's alrite. Coming here once in a while is fun.
Ah, this artist…
HomareThis artist is the representative of informalism.
AzumaI see, so their art style leans towards something that denies humanity. How intense.
BanriI don't hate it.
HomareI find it quite surprising to learn that you're interested in art.
BanriI did some art in class during my freshman year.
HomareI see. So you've been learning a lot of things. That's a good thing. Art has no boundaries.
AzumaIn that sense, you may even find some hints of theater while going around the gallery like this.

HomarePhew… Time sure flew by in a blink while we were busy looking around.
AzumaIt feels good to be sitting down and taking a little break.
BanriI'm starvin'.
HomareJust letting you know, the food in this cafe is delicious.
Azuma…Now, if I remember correctly, you want some advice about life, right?
HomareFeel free to ask us anything. We have lots of experiences in life.
BanriI don't think we can call it advice about life, though…
HomareI see.
AzumaHe's quite harsh.
BanriWhy did you decide to continue theater?
AzumaHmmm, let's see…
HomareNow that I think about it again, that's kind of a difficult question.
AzumaPart of it is because I have my fellow Winter Troupe members, and the others as well. But I assume you want a more personal answer, yes?
HomareIn the first place, what I love about art in general is, that touching moment when the feelings that lie dormant within you burst forth like an explosion.
That very moment is proof that we're alive, the big bang in our life! The radiant, eternal spectacle!
Banri(I don't really get it, but is that why he starts reciting poems whenever he gets inspired, without minding where he is…)
HomareLike an improvised poem, when I get so into my role, I feel like the lines just unconsciously come out of my mouth.
It's something that the past me, who could not understand other people's feelings nor empathize with them, would never have imagined doing.
Every time I get that feeling, it is as if I’ve felt the essence of the art of theater.
BanriI think I understand that.
AzumaWhen you grow up, you'll get used to repressing your true feelings and deceiving yourself…
But through the characters you play, you'll feel like every emotion you've been suppressing just starts to pour out all of a sudden. To me, it's such a fresh feeling.
Rather than baring our real selves, adults like us may finally be able to show ourselves by wearing a veil created by our roles.
HomareIn that sense, it's the complete opposite of the portrait thing the Autumn Troupe did.
AzumaI do admit you are amazing for delivering a performance as you are in front of an audience.
For me, I find it hard to expose myself that much.
BanriExposing yourself, huh… If you put it that way, even when I’m always calmly thinking about how I should present myself, I guess there's also some parts of me that I've been suppressing.
But whenever I act, there's a moment when the feelings I can't get anywhere else just start to overflow.
I guess I feel the same thing as both of you--the value of acting.
I don't know if it can be the answer to that question, though…
It can apply to other things, like drama, films, or physical expressions like dance.
I don't think it can be the reason why it has to be theater.
AzumaThe difference between theater, drama, and film… Is that something you have to be definitive about?
BanriTsumugi-san said the same thing. "Is 'I simply want to act' not good enough of an answer?"
I can feel the unmatched value of theater. Theater is the only thing that feels special to me.
What does theater mean to me? I want to find the answer to that.
HomareIn the past, there was a philosopher who…
Introduced the concept of reproduction technologies, such as video and so on, stripping away the power that works of art once had--something you could only enjoy "right there and then."
While I myself think that reproduced works of art like that can also move people's hearts…
I have a feeling that you, Banri-kun, have a strong attraction to the form of theater that can only be enjoyed once and can't ever be reproduced.
AzumaHow about you try to compare it?
BanriYou mean like, acting in other things besides theater productions…?
HomareThat is right. Who knows? You may find something if you compare it with other things.
You see, because I joined the theater industry, I was able to discover something new in my poems.

TenmaMaking an on-screen appearance?
BanriI don't mind playing extra or small roles. Is there anything I can take?
TenmaYou asked at the perfect time, then.
The drama series Hiro-san and I star in is going to hold an audition to look for a special guest star.
I'll talk to Igawa and get him to help you apply.
BanriThanks, dude.
TenmaIt all depends on you whether you can get accepted or not, though.
BanriDuh, I'll be accepted, o'course.
TenmaI'll look forward to sharing the screen with you, then.
