Episode 9: Boring Actor
Previous Main Story Next
Student A…It should start at 13:00, right?
Student BIsn't he late?
Student CMaybe it's canceled?
Banri
LecturerHe should arrive soon, so please wait a little bit more.
Kabuto…So this is the place?
Student AHe's here.
KabutoUhhh. I totally forgot what that guy told me to say for this.
I can just talk about what y'all gotta do to deliver a good performance, right?
LecturerWhat? Oh, yes.
Kabuto…Eat well and sleep well. That's all.
Banri(What the…? That's the end?)
Student BHold on. That's too short.
Student CWe spent more time waiting for him than this.
LecturerWe have a workshop after this. To those who would like to participate, please move to the rehearsal studio.
Banri(The heck is that guy…)

KabutoUhhh… How many times will we be doing this again?
LecturerLooking at your schedule, we'll be doing this once a month. There will be four sessions in total.
KabutoIs what he said.
LecturerLet us begin this session with self-introductions.
KabutoKabuto Amadate, Hyakka Troupe's actor and director. What are we going to do again?
LecturerThe first session will be about "letting out one's emotions."
KabutoOh, 's that so?
Banri(So we're starting with the basic of the basics, huh…)
KabutoNow, express happiness, sadness, and anger with the lines I’m giving y'all.
…*snores*.
Banri(Dude, he's totes sleepin'!)
LecturerKabuto-san, all the participants have performed. Please give us your comments.
KabutoNngh? Oh… First, Yamamoto. Be careful with your intonation. Don't just focus on the stress and tone. The overall feeling of the phrase is also important.
YamamotoU-Understood!
KabutoYoshioka. Pay more attention to your voice control. Use your abdominal muscles.
YoshiokaUnderstood.
Banri(He gave decent comments, surprisingly… Did he properly watch us?)
KabutoNext is Settsu… Nothin' in particular.
BanriWha…
Student AThat's Settsu for you.
Student BHis performance is perfect, of course.
Banri
KabutoThis much is okay, right?
LecturerIn that case, we're wrapping up this session here. Thank you for participating.
Student AThank you.
Banri--Do you have a moment?
KabutoHaah?
BanriI'm the only one who didn't receive any critique. Can you give me some opinions? Anything is fine.
Kabuto…Ain't it nice that you didn't receive any?
BanriI want to further improve my acting skills.
KabutoHardworking, I see.
Banri…Because I'll be the lead actor in an important play that affects my theater troupe's future, I want to do everything I can to grow as an actor.
KabutoLead actor, huh…
First off, I have no problem with how you express your emotions.
Unlike the other students, your voice control and intonation are considerably good.
You have great style and look, not to mention your sense of fashion. You have communication skills as well. You're blessed with nice things as an actor.
From a director's point of view, you're the type of actor who really comes in handy on the scene.
But… I won’t ever pick you to be the leading actor.
BanriWhat?
KabutoYou're just too good that… How do I say it, just like a plain honor student.
I can see you're the type who will be fine as long as you act. You can't convey the things you wanna express.
Personally, I don't like that kind of actor.
Enroll into A.U. without any trouble, work at a theater company, have nice clothes, and probably have a pretty big house. You basically have everything.
BanriWhat the hell are you sayin'…
KabutoI can tell from just one look.
You're clever and have nice intuition. You look around your surroundings well and know how to present yourself.
Even during this workshop, you performed your piece after understanding what my intention was. You're easy to deal with.
I figured you'll do just fine in any field.
But from my point of view, a guy like you will only bring a performance close to 100 points. Pushing it to 120 points is impossible.
Let's say, even during our session just now, I'd prefer an unstable actor or one who still lacks something over an almighty actor like you.
But like I said before, an actor like you really comes in handy. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think highly of you.
BanriThat's not the case with you, though, right?
KabutoYou're a borin' actor to me, only paying attention to how you look on the outside.
Banri--tch.
(Shit… No matter how pissed I am, nothing will change even if I disagree.)
(I do admit I pay attention to how I present myself when I act. I think it's one of my strengths.)
(However, the more I continue acting, the more I understand the difference between me and the kind of actor this dude said, the kind who has overcome something–like Hyodo, for instance.)
(To be honest, I have a complex about it.)
I understand what you said very well.
I don't think it's bad to keep making use of my strength and continue what I'm doing together with those who acknowledge it.
However, if I'm going to lead our next play, I want to bring it to 120 points. 100 points is not an option.
KabutoWhat a pain in the ass… Why are you doin' theater in the first place, anyway? What's your purpose?
Banri--.
That… Up until now, I find everything easy and boring. But among them, acting is the only thing I find challenging--.
KabutoIt doesn't have to be theater, y'know.
Do you think you absolutely have to do theater just because you find it a little bit interesting? Can you call that a reason?
Anything is fine as long as it's challenging, right?
Be it filmmaking, drama production, dance, painting, calligraphy, anything is challenging if you wish to master it.
Why don't you quit theater and do that instead?
You start acting, join a theater troupe, and enroll in A.U.'s Theater Department. Ain't you just unconditionally accepting that it has to be theater, just because you've progressed too far?
Banri(A reason why it has to be theater? There isn't anything I'm passionate about besides theater.)
(It has to be acting--But if Hyodo didn't start acting…)
(Did I only choose theater because I could fight Hyodo that way…?)
(No. Even though that was how I started theater, it's different now. I'm doing it seriously now…)
KabutoI can't feel your determination to take the stage.
Banri
…In that case, why are you doin' theater?
KabutoTo survive. Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't have anything except theater. …I don't have any choice.
I can only bet everything on theater. If you were to fight that kind of guy, d'you think you have enough to win?
A performance delivered by someone who has set his determination on it is strong. You can't do it.
