Silent Fishing
Backstage StoriesDelivery Man | Thank you very much!. |
Izumi | Thank you for your hard work. It’s addressed to...Azuma-san? Another coloring book?
- At Azuma’s room - Azuma-san, you have a delivery! |
Azuma | Thank you, Director. What perfect timing. Can you take a little break? I was about to pour a pot of tea. |
Izumi | Is that ok? Well, if you insist, I’ll come in for a bit. |
Hisoka | (sleeping) bye...bye... |
Guy | (deep in concentration) ... |
Izumi | Oh Guy-san, wait is he...doing a coloring book? |
Azuma | Mhm. I invited him to come give it a try, you see. |
Izumi | Let’s take a look...wow...it’s so delicate and neat, it looks almost like a photograph! |
Guy | Director, you came in? I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t realize... |
Izumi | You got lost in your coloring, huh? |
Guy | (blushing) I’ve done...coloring books with Citronia when he was a child...so i wanted to feel that sense of excitement once more... |
Izumi | Guy-san, could it be you’re a little shy? |
Guy | It’s my first time trying coloring as an adult. It’s mysterious but it’s...soothing my heart. |
Azuma | Director, since you’ve brought the new book, would you care to color with us? |
Izumi | Sure! Speaking of which, is this a hobby of yours, Guy? |
Guy | I don’t know if this is a hobby of mine, but... I like to collect old records. |
Azuma | Oh, is that so? |
Izumi | That’s a pretty cool hobby! What else do you like to do? |
Guy | I like... to go fishing. |
Izumi | Fishing! That’s a bit unexpected! |
Azuma | In the ocean? Or the river? |
Guy | The ocean. Zafra is a nation surrounded by the sea, so I would set out to fish whenever I had time. However, our current proximity to the sea is quite far. It makes fishing...difficult indeed. |
Azuma | Come now, that can’t be. Certainly there must be a fishing moat somewhere nearby. |
Guy | Japan has...spots where one can fish in a city such as this? |
Izumi | That reminds me, I think there’s one on the edge of town. |
Hisoka | I’ve worked... near there. |
Azuma | Oh, he’s arisen. |
Hisoka | Yeah, the fishing moat is nice... not too loud... |
Izumi | I’ve been down by the moat, but I’ve never actually fished there before. Guy-san, if you wanted, we could go check it out together. |
Guy | I am indeed interested, if you will have me. |
- The Director uses overly-formal speech here, implying sarcasm. It will most likely go over Guy’s head, however...
Guy | So this is the place where one can go fishing... |
Izumi | Today’s a weekday, and there aren’t many people here now. Perhaps we really could take our time here and relax. |
Guy | You’re right. This place, it really is a good place isn’t it? |
Izumi | Yeah. By the way, isn’t your backpack kind of gigantic? That’s so unlike you, Guy-san. |
Guy | Ah. When I told the others that I was going to my very first fishing moat, everyone in the winter troupe gave me various necessary items. |
Izumi | Necessary items? |
Guy | From Tsukioka: blankets, for when it gets cold by the waterside. From Takato, dumbbells, for...some reason I am not aware of. |
Izumi | A blanket, why thank you! But the dumbbells...aren’t they heavy? |
Guy | From Arisugawa, I was given a book of his poetry. He said that if I read it aloud, the fish will “gather around thy rods and swoon into thy nets”. |
Izumi | (Good lord, Homare-san...) |
Guy | After that, Yukishiro gifted me this sake. He said that in Japan, it is good luck to fish while drinking sake. |
Izumi | Is it really ok for us to be drinking here? |
Guy | From Mikage, I acquired marshmallows. I heard him say that it’s a fish’s favorite food. |
Izumi | You misheard, they’re Hisoka’s favorite food.... |
Guy | I see. Well, let’s try normal bait first.
Yes, good job. Next, cast the fishing line. |
Izumi | Got it! |
Guy | ....... |
Izumi | ....... |
Guy | ....... |
Izumi | Now what? |
Guy | We wait. |
Izumi | I see... |
Guy | ....... |
Guy | ....... |
Guy | ....... |
Izumi | (Guy-san... is perfectly still. Not moving a muscle, he looks as if frozen in place.) |
Guy | Director... |
Izumi | Ah, yes? What’s up? |
Guy | Pull it out. |
Izumi | Eh? What?? Now??? Uhh-um..!! |
Guy | Allow me to help. |
Izumi | Sorry! Yes, please do!
... Yes!!! I got the fish! |
Guy | I’m so happy. |
Izumi | Yes, but... |
Guy | ...? What’s wrong? |
Izumi | It’s...smaller than I thought it would be, this fish. Is this usually how it goes? On TV, the fish always seem to be much bigger... |
Guy | ...it’s normal. |
Izumi | Guy-san? |
Guy | I’m so sorry, it’s just... you said the same exact thing Citronia did when he caught his first fish with me. |
Izumi | I did? |
Guy | Back home in Zafra, Citronia would scold me all the time. When my thoughts became troubled, I would take quietly to fishing to ponder them. But one time, he came with me. |
Izumi | You went in secret? |
Guy | Yes. But after looking at the fish he caught, Citronia complained that it was so much smaller than his struggle made it seem.
That was when....Citronia was 10 years old. Nostalgic... |
Izumi | 10 years huh... so I had the same reaction as a little kid... |
Guy | It is a lovely occasion when the Director can express her inner child. |
Izumi | Wow, smooth catch. Thank you so very, very much*. Well, let’s take Citron with us next time. We can all come together. |
Guy | Ah, I was thinking the same, but I don’t think it is necessary. After all, you two have the same energy. |
