Let’s Goukon![1]
Backstage StoriesTsumugi | Like this…? No, I guess it would be like this…? |
Izumi | (I wonder what Tsumugi-san is doing as he’s heading for the dorm… Looks like he’s trying to do a pose…) |
...Um, Tsumugi-san? | |
Tsumugi | Whoa! D-director! |
I’m sorry… You caught me doing something embarrassing…
Izumi | Are you perhaps practicing for a role? |
Tsumugi | Ahaha… Yes I am. |
Keiichi is the character I’m playing in our next performance. He’s a pleasant young man on the outside, but he’s actually a playboy.
Only Keiichi’s outward appearance is shown in the play, but I also want to have an image of his true nature.
Izumi | I see. Your acting will certainly show more depth if you keep his true nature in mind. |
Tsumugi | But it’s difficult. Unlike him, I’ve never been with many women… |
Izumi | Er, that’s only reasonable! |
In any case, cheating aside, if there’s someone here that’s used to dealing with women then you can probably ask them for advice.
Tsumugi | That’s true. But, someone like that— |
Kazunari | Good work piko-cha~n! Kazunari Miyoshi is now home~ ♪ |
Tsumugi | ...There’s one! |
Kazunari | Eh!? |
Kazunari | Hold on a minute! Don’t lump me together with nasty men like that! I’m a super duper firm believer of true love, you know!? |
It’s highkey depressing that Tsumu-Tsumu and Director-chan think of me like that~
Tsumugi | S-sorry. |
Izumi | It’s not that we think you’re prone to cheating, Kazunari-kun. You just seem like an expert at interacting with women. |
Tsumugi | That’s why I want you to teach me how to be a man that can talk to women well. Can you please help me? |
Kazunari | I see~ Ok! In that case, leave it to me! |
Oh yea! If you wanna talk to girls, there’s a super easy method!
Izumi | That’s kind of a shady way of putting it, but... What kind of method? |
Kazunari | A goukon, of course! |
Tsumugi | Goukon!? That’s a little… |
Kazunari | But Tsumu-Tsumu, you wanna talk to girls right? |
Itaru | Ohh, Tsumugi does? |
Tsuzuru | That’s kind of unexpected. |
Citron | The Spring Troupe practice is done~ You’re talking about introducing some ladies to Tsumugi? |
Tsumugi | T-that’s not it! I’m trying to get into character for our next performance— |
Itaru | I see. So now you’re going to a goukon. |
Tsumugi | But I’ve only accompanied people to goukon a few times when I was a student, so the bar is set really high… |
Kazunari | Then let’s do it with three pairs! That way there’s only a few peeps, and it won’t be uncomfortable! |
Izumi | Is that how it works? |
Kazunari | Yup yup! It’s gonna be fine ‘cause I’ll be there too~ And Tsuzurun too! |
Tsuzuru | Me!? |
Itaru | Here comes a coercion event. |
Tsumugi | Kazu-kun kindly suggested the idea after all, and if the two of you are there… |
Tsuzuru | I didn’t say anything about goi… |
Kazunari | You don’t have a lotta experience with goukon either, right Tsuzurun? Think of it as social studies! |
Tsuzuru | That’s not considered social studies! |
Tsumugi | It may be useful for your scripts someday. Besides, it will be reassuring if I have a kindred soul with me. |
Tsuzuru | …*sigh*. I’ll just be sitting there, got it? |
Tsumugi | A goukon, huh… |
Hey Tasuku, what do people do in goukon again?
Tasuku | ...They talk? |
Tsumugi | About what? |
Tasuku | ...About hobbies and stuff. |
Tsumugi | Isn’t that for omiai?[2] |
*sigh*. You’re the same as me. We don’t have much experience with goukon because all we think about is acting.
Tasuku | Well sorry. |
Tsumugi | Ah, people play games in goukon, right! Like the King’s Game. Wouldn’t it be better if we practiced?[3] |
Tasuku | How do we even practice with the two of us? |
Tsumugi | Right… |
Kazunari | Yaaay! Let’s have a blast today!
Girl A | Super exciting~!
Girl B | We’re Kazuchi’s university friends! Nice to meetcha~!
Tsuzuru | Y-yeah.. | ||||||||
Tsumugi | P-pleased to meet you…
Girl C | Hey, hey, what should we call the two of you?
Tsumugi | Erm… Feel free to decide...
Kazunari | This is Tsumu-Tsumu, and that’s Tsuzurun~!
Girl A | OMG, super cute~!
Tsumugi | C-cute…?[4] | ||||||||
Kazunari | I gave them those names! Aren’t they lit?
Girl B | It’s lit Kazuchi~! Super cute![5]
Tsuzuru | ...Their conversation is going too fast…
Tsumugi | I don’t even understand what they’re saying in the first place…
Girl A | These fries are too good! Not gonna lie, I wanna be able to make these!
Girl B | I know right! Ah, do you two cook and stuff? Anyways there was something that looked super good when I hit the bini the other day~
Tsuzuru | …… | ||||||||
Tsumugi | Huh? Sorry, can you say that one more time?
Girl B | Like I said~ At the conbini![6]
Kazunari | Tsumu-Tsumu, it’s like you’ve become a grandpa! And Tsuzurun, did you transform into a Jizo statue?[7]
Girl C | That’s so hilarious! Anyways you should talk more, Tsuzurun!
Tsumugi | Anyways…?[8] | ||||||||
Kazunari | Let’s see… It’s a lil too early, but let’s play the King’s Game!
Girl A | Turn it up! Let’s do it!
Kazunari | Who’s the King!
Girl B | Yappi! I’m the King~☆
Girl C | What are your orders~!?
Girl B | Let’s see~ Number 2 must flick Number 5 on the forehead!
Tsuzuru | Number 5… That’s me.
Tsumugi | Ah, I’m Number 2.
Kazunari | The two guys got called~!
Girl A | Come on, guys! Your energies are too low! Turn it up a little and say it cutely!
Girl B | Tsumu-Tsumu, give us a wink!
Tsumugi | W-wink!? E-erm… Maybe I should do it like Kazu-kun.
I-I’m Number 2~ Piko☆ | |||||||||
Kazunari | Hold uuup! You’re using piko wrong~!
Girl C | Oh my god~! He winks so awkwardly!
Girl A | Tsumu-Tsumu, what a hottie~!!
Tsumugi | H-huh? | ||||||||
Tsuzuru | Tsukioka-san, thank you for your hard work…
Tsumugi | ——So, I did my best, but… Women are complicated after all…
Banri | Nah, wasn’t the other party just tough to deal with?
Tsumugi | But there were a bunch of things that I realized.
Banri | Ohh, like what? | ||||||||
Tsumugi | ...I realized that I’m really bad at winking.
Banri | Pft! Seriously!?[9]
Tsumugi | It’s not funny though… What am I going to do if I have to act out a role where I have to wink?
Banri | What kind of role would that be— Oh? It’s Director-chan.
Izumi | Huh? Are you two on your way home from a cafe?
Banri | Perfect timing. Listen to this, Director-chan. Didn’t Tsumugi-san go to a goukon the other day?
He’s saying that over there he realized that he sucks at winking.
Tsumugi | Geez. You’re laughing too much, Banri-kun.
Izumi | Winking, huh… | ||||||||
CHOICE 1: Why don’t you practice with everyone? [+]
|
|||||||||
CHOICE 2: How did you wink? [+]
|
|||||||||
Izumi | Winking is something you don’t do very often after all.
Tsumugi | Can you wink, Director?
Izumi | Sure I can. …See? | ||||||||
Tsumugi | …… | ||||||||
Izumi | Huh? Wasn’t I able to do it!?
Tsumugi | ...No, that’s not it. I just thought that it was cute.
Izumi | Erm… Thank you very much. I’m a little embarrassed.
Banri | ...You said that you went because you’re trying to get into the role of a guy that’s good at dealing with women, but—
Tsumugi-san… There was no need for you to go to a goukon, was there. |
Notes
- ↑ As you might already know, goukon are mixers/group blind dates where people mingle and get to know each other and possibly hook up
- ↑ Omiai/miai is a meeting arranged for two people (oftentimes by the parents) where they’re introduced to each other with the intention of possibly getting married
- ↑ In ousama game/the king’s game, people draw lots and they either get a number or they get to be king. The king gets to order people around/make dares using the numbers without knowing who they are. For example, ‘number 2 must kiss number 5’ - stuff like that
- ↑ Girl A actually said ‘kyawatan’, which means ‘cute’ in gyaru speak. Tsumugi is confused
- ↑ They didn’t actually say lit, but ‘kami’ (神) - it means god/godly and in slang it’s used to describe something really amazing/awesome
- ↑ Conbini = convenience store
- ↑ Kazu is talking about Jizo/Ojizosama, a Buddhist monk. Ojizosama statues look something like this
- ↑ Tsumugi is confused because Girl C said ‘torima’ (とりま), slang for ‘toriaezu’ (とりあえず)
- ↑ I couldn’t really think of a better way to translate そこかよ! in this context. It’s what you say when someone misses the point/someone says something unexpected. In this case Banri is like ‘That’s what you realized!?’
