MakinoToday I’m giving you guys some time to delve into your roles before you present your acting at the end.
You’re free to explore your roles however you want. In addition to your performances, I’m going to have you explain your thoughts, too.
All right, begin.
Juza....
Banri....
Makino—Next, Hyodo.
JuzaYes.
MakinoYou didn’t do a bad job delving into your character, but you suck at incorporating that into your acting. Practice getting into your role more quickly.
Because it’s not like you’ll always have lots of time to practice.
JuzaYes.
MakinoNext, Settsu.
BanriYea~h.
MakinoYou went too shallow—that’s surface-level stuff. Dig deeper into the character’s feelings.
You don’t have enough empathy. Your cold personality is showing.
BanriTch. What’s my personality got to do with this?
Geez, he runs you down the same way the old man Yuuzo does.
MakinoThat’s all for today. See you next time. If you have any questions, ask me now.
Juza....
MakinoWhat, you’re still here?
JuzaI was writing down everyone else’s questions, so....
Makino....
What kind of actor do you want to become?
Juza....
...I want to become an actor who can freely perform any role that comes my way.
But my range of performances is still too limited for that—I don’t have enough to draw from... That’s why I want more skill; I want to be more of an all-rounder.
MakinoIsn’t that just Settsu?
Juza——.
...It’s not like I wanna become him.
MakinoWhat kind of actor is Settsu to you?
Juza...Even during our troupe audition, he read his lines fluently without any experience. He looked like he knew how to get into role, too.
During actual performances, he’s calm—he’s aware of every corner of the stage. When he’s acting, he can present himself exactly the way he wants to.
If we play the same role—I feel like he makes the character more enthralling than I do; I don’t have the skill.
MakinoWhy do you think that?
JuzaWhen I... stand on stage, I get completely absorbed into my role. I can’t stay calm.
It’s like I become my role, and... I can’t think about how to present myself.
I can’t keep track of what’s going on; I just act frantically, and before I know it, it’s over.
He comes up with these meticulous calculations when he’s acting, but my mind is too occupied for that sort of thing.
Makino...Thought so.
What you should treasure already lies inside of you. Stop averting your eyes.
JuzaAverting my eyes? From what....
MakinoBefore you think about what kind of actor you want to become, you need to understand what kind of actor you are right now.
You can look to the future and decide what direction you want to take after that.
Juza——.
MakinoSee you.
JuzaWhat kind of actor I am right now....
JuzaA, e, i, u, e, o, a, o, ka, ke, ki, ku, ke, ko, ka, ko....[1]
OmiWhy don’t you take a break? I made some scones.
JuzaThanks.
OmiWant some more cream?
JuzaYeah.
OmiAdd as much as you want. I brought some jam, too.
JuzaThanks.
Omi...You look troubled lately.
Juza....
During the workshop the other day, I was told that I need to understand what kind of actor I am right now....
And I don’t have a clue.
Up till now, I was so happy to stand on stage, to act; that’s why I practiced so frantically.
I never really thought too deeply about what kind of actor I was, objectively.
I just vaguely thought I wanted to expand my potential so that I could act better, and do all sorts of performances.
But... When he asked me what kind of actor I wanted to be, I got confused.
What kind of actor am I? What can I do; what can’t I do? What do I want to become?
When I looked at my acting on screen, I only saw all the things that I can’t do—if you start counting them, they’re endless.
...I feel pathetic. There are guys out there who can calmly analyze what kind of actors they are, and look towards their futures, but I....
Omi...What kind of actor is Hyodo Juza, objectively? Maybe the guys who can see that best are—.
Juza?
OmiAll right.
JuzaOmi-san? What’s wrong?
OmiNothing. I just came up with a good use for this video camera.
