English

In the direct shining sunlight, I look at the radiant STORY
Through a bottle of a sports drink, I take a look and then avert my gaze

Anticipation and unrest intersect upon the horizon line
I wish I could just laugh and say "it'll be alright!"

What?
Why?
Wait!

I'm not very good at these difficult conversations
As soon as I notice, I'm already wearing an unhappy expression

I'm far too useless, as the summer clouds stretch on in the sky
I knew the path would be hard, but I thought that I could really make it this time

I still believe in that summer where
I stood every day and swung at the STARTLINE

If only I could just catch a glimpse
Of that figure from behind

The replays and clear weather both don't seem to end
So my hands will also keep going like before

Maybe this cracked broken LOUDSPEAKER
Can still hold some heat in it!

Looking beyond the blue skies, seeing the signs you give me
Hanging my memories upon, those silver sneakers
The crowd cheering a home run, the end result of the game that
I wanted to know, and yet I did not know

Two outs into the inning,[2] I turned to face the radiant STORY
Once again, my demons whispered in my ear
Anticipation and unrest spilled forth deep in my chest
But I had someone at my back telling me "it'll be alright!"

I still believe in that summer where
I stood every day and swung at the STARTLINE

If only these tears of frustration
Could begin to disappear

These hands, feelings, regrets, and all that I've left
Please, somehow just let it happen[3]

I shout out from my heart
I can still hold some heat in me

Facing a young man in a downpour
Not an umbrella in sight
This heat so hot that it feels like burning
Was it because I knew nothing?
Was it because you knew as well?
No, because I should have known
Tearing off the scabs of my memories
I remember my reason for standing there

Holding on tightly to the reason why
I stood with my dreams to swing at the STARTLINE
It doesn't hurt at all, this time it's not an act

The ball that the young man drew suddenly pitches a question towards him
"Just once more, are you ready to move forward?"

Here is the Summer where
I take off from swinging every day at the STARTLINE
The sky in my bottle has burst open to shine brightly

This running start Summer will never end
And as I catch glimpse of that figure from behind
I reach out my hand, and shout out
and shout out, and shout out

The rain has finally cleared

Notes

  1. A sinker is a type of fastball pitch in baseball. The Seiten in the title is a pun off 晴天 (seiten) which means "fair weather" or "clear skies", but uses the character 転ten instead, which means "to turn around". I interpreted this as reference to Kumon bravely stepping out to "turn around" his life for the better, so I translated it to "Silver-lining" (from the idiom "every cloud has a silver lining") to preserve the weather reference, and imply that things are or will turn for the better.
  2. Three outs means the end of the offensive team's scoring opportunities for the inning. As a pitcher and part of the defensive team, Kumon is responsible for getting these "outs", so two outs means he's only one away from ending the opponent team's scoring turn. In other words, it's a high pressure clutch moment for him.
  3. Unsure about this phrase
