Citron“Kyu-kyu-no-no~!”
I’m having some trouble deciding on a good pose.
GuyCitronia, it’s the “Kyushuu animal cruelty ban[1].”
SakyoIt’s Kyukyunyoritsuryou. You two need to work on your lines, not your poses.
AzumaI think your poses are cool.
CitronWe have tomorrow off, so I’m going to Seimei shrine to pray for our successful poses!
AzumaOh, making a wish sounds like a good idea. Is Guy joining you?
CitronOf course he’s coming with me!
Guy—I guess I am.
SakyoWonder what the others are planning on doing.
GuyMiyoshi and Fushimi said they were going shopping.
CitronHe was saying, “Kyoto has lotsa fancy shops, you know~.”
AzumaAzami and I are planning on making a day trip to some nearby hot springs. They’re known for making your skin beautiful.
Want to join us, Sakyo-kun?
SakyoNo...
AzumaAre you going to visit his grave?
SakyoI’m going to stay at the hotel to re-read my script and books on film.
CitronSakyo, you’re even more of a theater-demon than usual!
GuyTrue. You’re exceptionally focused. Is something particular motivating you?
Sakyo...I guess I can tell you guys.
I was influenced by Hyodo’s acting during Autumn Troupe’s Sixth Performance.
Hyodo’s determination—his performance, one that only he was capable of—honestly, I was overwhelmed watching it all. At the same time, I also felt envious.
It’s not just Hyodo. Autumn troupe’s members are all improving at incredible speed every time we put on a new show.
I’m the oldest of the group, but none of that matters on stage. I don’t want to lose to them.
I refuse to give up challenging myself—so that we can continue being rivals.
...I can’t let them see me act so childishly desperate, though. It’d kill me.
AzumaRivals, huh. That’s a wonderful relationship unique to Autumn Troupe.
CitronJuza really was incredible during the Sixth Performance!
GuyHe truly embodied the dark hero.
SakyoYeah, it was as if Blood had possessed him.
CitronCan’t lose to him.
GuyAgreed.
CitronBy the way, what was that about visiting a cave?
AzumaA cave?
GuyA grave.
CitronThat.
Sakyo...My late father was born in Kyoto.
GuyI see.
CitronThen you should go!
SakyoNo, I already said this to Yukishiro, but I hardly remember my father. It doesn’t feel right to visit him like this.
CitronYou really don’t remember anything?
Sakyo....
It’s not like I don’t remember anything, because I feel like I have faint memories of him, but... I don’t know if they’re my real memories, or stories that my mother told me.
GuySo you don’t have any memories you’re certain of.
SakyoYeah... The only thing I know of for sure is my name.
GuyYour name?
SakyoApparently my father named me. My mother once told me that. But that’s it; that’s the only connection I have with my father.
How am I supposed to visit his grave with just that...
Guy...Granting a name is like casting a charm.
CitronWhat’s this? Did I activate Ok Goggle by accident?
GuyNo... I looked through all sorts of sources while researching onmyoji for my role, and found this piece of information.
To grant a name, to determine what sort of entity someone will become, means to take responsibility for that someone.
Citron...That goes for this play, too.
Seimei granted a name to Tsukishiro, and Tsukishiro granted a name to Hisui.
Sakyo——.
Azuma...You can’t name someone without feeling for them.
GuyYes. I, too, have a name: Gai. It was granted to me so that I would never forget who I am—
I believed myself to be an android, and shut down every emotion within me. The reason I could return to my true self was because I have this name.
I feel like I have a connection with my parents because of the name they’ve given me.
CitronWow, he may be useless, but he says good things once in a while.
GuyFuruichi, he named you so that you could be yourself. That’s not an insignificant connection: it’s a definite one.
Sakyo...Yeah. You might be right.
AzumaDetermining what sort of entity Sakyo-kun would become, huh. Well, I can’t imagine Sakyo-kun being called anything other than Sakyo-kun.
GuySomething other than Sakyo... So, Furuichi Ukyo[2], for example?
CitronIs that a twin or a split personality!? Ukyo must be a wasteful Bodhisattva!
GuyWhat a complicated personality.
CitronHe’s wasting our budget away as we speak, building a shining stage decked with illuminations!
AzumaThat sounds interesting too.
SakyoJeez, stop messing around with my name....
Sakyo—Hm?
CitronGzzz.....
GuyZzzz....
Sakyo(Looks like I ended up falling asleep.)
*Phone buzzing*
(It’s from Mother... She usually doesn’t call me this late.)
SakyoHello?
Sakyo’s mother“Sorry for calling you so late. Is this okay?”
SakyoYeah. I’m surprised to hear from you at this hour.
Sakyo’s mother“We were talking about your gifts from the other day. They told me to thank you properly, so I had to call before I forgot.”
SakyoYou didn’t have to.
Sakyo’s mother“And Miyako was asking if you’d be back for her birthday.”
SakyoNext month, right? I’ll add it to my calendar.
Sakyo’s mother“Are you outside?”
Sakyo—I’m at a hotel in Kyoto.
Sakyo’s mother“Oh, so you planned your trip for today? How nice.”
SakyoHey, I never asked till now, but... Did you get my name from somewhere?
Sakyo’s mother“Hm? I never told you? Well... it was from a paper fortune.”
SakyoA paper fortune?
Sakyo’s mother“I’ll send you a picture later.”

Notes

  1. The “shorui-awaremi-no-rei” is an actual edict from the Tokugawa era forbidding cruelty to animals
  2. The “左” in Sakyo's name means “left;” here, Guy has switched the character to “右” which means “right”
