Act 4
Episode 30: Theater Nerd[1]
Previous Main Story Next
IzumiLet’s see... I have to go to the bank, and to the post office, and then…
TsumugiDirector, are you going somewhere?
IzumiI was thinking of going shopping for dinner and then finishing off some errands.
TsumugiWe can do the shopping.
TasukuWe’re free anyway.
IzumiIt’s your precious free time while performances are still ongoing, so you two should use it to relax and get some rest.
TsumugiIt’s just shopping; it should be no problem.
IzumiAre you sure?
TasukuYeah. What do we need to buy?
Tasuku
TsumugiIt’s probably better if we go buy the stationery first.
Tasuku
TsumugiTasuku?
TasukuWhat is it, Michael?
—I mean, Tsumugi.
TsumugiHaha, you still haven’t gotten rid of that habit of yours. You always end up calling people by their roles whenever we have a show ongoing.
TasukuShut up. I’m usually careful about it. I just happened to be thinking about the play, so I ended up saying it.
TsumugiYou were thinking about the play?
TasukuWhen we get back to the dorm, let’s go through Act 3.
TsumugiOkay. You’re such a theater nerd as usual.
TasukuYou’re one to talk.
TsumugiThis kind of brings back memories. Even back then, we talked about plays from morning until night.
TasukuWe sure did…
TsumugiThere was that time we needed practical experience for a play, so we even went on a sudden road trip without any money…[2]
TasukuIt was tough spending the night in the jeep.
TsumugiYeah.
…Anyway, what were you going to say about Act 3 earlier?
TasukuYou’re curious?
TsumugiOf course I am.
TasukuSee, you’re a theater nerd yourself.
TsumugiShut up. So, which scene were you talking about?
Tasuku“How’s life down there on earth, Michael?”
Tsumugi“Raphael! Look, she wrote me a letter in reply!”
Tasuku“I can’t read the contents of that letter from up here, you know.”
Tsumugi“Oh, that’s right. I’ll read it to you then.”
TasukuThat part. I think you should move a little more in that line.
TsumugiYou’re right.
Tasuku“Looks like you’re fully enjoying yourself. But you do remember that I told you not to fall in love with a human, right?”
Tsumugi“I know that. This is different. It’s just that, I want to do something for her sake. That’s all there is to it.”
Passerby AA street act?
Passerby BWhich theater are they from?
Tsumugi
Tasuku
TsumugiUmm, we’re from MANKAI Company!
TasukuThere’s standing-room only and same-day tickets left, but please come see the Reborn Winter Troupe’s debut play!
Reni
TsumugiI think we got all that we need. Shopping took longer than I expected.
TasukuOh. That reminds me, I forgot to buy new practice clothes.
TsumugiWant me to go with you?
TasukuNo, it’s fine. Go on ahead without me.
TsumugiYou sure? Okay.
TsumugiNow then…
Reni…You haven’t improved at all. Do you intend to face us with that level of acting?
TsumugiKamikizaka-san…
ReniI thought so back then too. When you’re next to Tasuku, you stand out too much – your cheap acting, that is. Your acting is plain and has no appeal to it.
In the end, you are only suited for amateur school plays. Your acting is nowhere near professional level.
Tsumugi――
ReniAre you not embarrassed of standing in front of people with that level of skill? How about having some self-awareness?
Tsumugi…I will definitely win against you with my own acting.
ReniMy, my… I went out of my way to give you advice too. That arrogant attitude of yours is the reason why you haven’t improved.
Well, it doesn’t matter to me if it means I can witness your unsightly defeat. I can already picture Tasuku’s chagrined expression.
Tsumugi
IzumiWelcome back! Thank you for going shopping!
TsumugiIt’s nothing—
Hisoka…Where are the marshmallows?
TsumugiOh, I got them here.
Hisoka*sneeze*
IzumiHuh? Hisoka-san, did you catch a cold?
HomareHisoka-kun, loitering around again?
AzumaHey, back to bed you go.
IzumiOh, Azuma-san, Homare-san.
HomareI was being cautious, but the moment I took my eyes off of him last night, he ended up sleeping in the courtyard.
AzumaIt’s because he sleeps regardless of where he is even in this cold weather…
IzumiI can’t believe you caught a cold while performances are ongoing… If it doesn’t get better, you won’t be able to go on stage you know!?
Hisoka…I’m fine.
AzumaOh, no no. You don’t have a fever yet, but you have to get better today somehow.
IzumiHisoka-san, get some sleep and get better.
Hisoka…Okay.
IzumiHey, where are you going with that bag of marshmallows!? Off to bed you go!
HomareI suppose I must stand guard and watch him today.
AzumaThat’s right. We’re counting on you, Homare.
HomareI’m turning the lights off.
You mustn’t wander around outside, got it? If you sleep outside again, you are not getting any marshmallows tomorrow.
Hisoka…Okay.
HomareWell then, good night.
Hisoka…Good night.
Homare*yawn*
Hisoka-kun, how is your cold—
…Hmm!? He’s gone!?

Notes

  1. 演劇バカ literally means ‘theater idiot’ - not in the sense that they’re dumb but it refers to the fact that they’re obsessed with anything related to theater/acting/plays, so ‘theater nerd’ it is (thank you shiroi!)
  2. The term used here was 貧乏旅行 (budget travel, penniless travel, literally “poor travel”)
