Act 4
Episode 34: With You, Whom I Want to Stand Next to
Previous Main Story Next
Tasuku…*deep breath*
TasukuTsumugi.
Tsumugi――
TasukuSorry I yelled at you earlier.
TsumugiHuh…?
If it’s about the performance today, I’m the one at fault—
TasukuThat’s not the only thing I want to apologize for.
I’ve always regretted not saying anything to you after we auditioned for GOD-za.
I’ve always wanted to do theater with you too. Ever since that school arts festival—
That’s why I asked you to take GOD-za’s enrolment exam with me.
TsumugiIt can’t be helped that I failed the exam. There’s nothing you have to apologize for, Tasuku.
TasukuIt’s not that. Let me tell you what I wasn’t able to say to you back then. Please hear me out.
I’ve always liked your acting.
You make delicate expressions that I can never do. Even when it comes to the miming you’re so good at, you endlessly take things seriously with a strict attitude.[1]
I felt proud to stand on stage with you.
But at the same time, I was envious. I envied your acting, something that I can never imitate.
TsumugiYou did?
TasukuAnd yet I wasn’t able to say those things honestly to you, even though you were always beside me.
If I had told you, then you probably wouldn’t have quit theater.
I covered up my feelings of guilt by shifting them into anger towards you for quitting theater… I’m sorry.
TsumugiTasuku…
TasukuJust stay the way you are, and act. Act, in a way that I'd want to stand beside you.[2]
It’s not just me. I’m sure those guys are thinking the same thing.
Tsumugi
HomareI wonder how Tsumugi-kun is doing.
Hisoka…We’ll lose if we do it like that.
AzumaI agree. But Tsumugi must have done that for a reason too…
IzumiLet’s put our faith in him and wait.
TasukuSorry for the wait.
Tsumugi
Everyone, I’m sorry for doing something so selfish during today’s performance.
I wanted to improve my acting; I felt like I needed to improve my acting – I got so flustered by those thoughts that I forgot the most important thing.
I want to re-examine my own acting once more.
IzumiTsumugi-san…
HomareI like your acting, Tsumugi-kun. You must take more pride in it.
AzumaI agree. Tsumugi, rejecting your own acting also means rejecting everything about this play.
Hisoka…Have confidence.
TsumugiConfidence, huh… That’s right.
I was wrong. This play isn’t created just from my acting alone…
Let’s improve it. Let’s improve our acting, in our own way—
TasukuYeah.
HomareHm.
IzumiOkay, let’s do some final adjustments for tomorrow’s performance! And let’s do it so that we won’t have any regrets!
TasukuGOD-za’s stage is way bigger than this. We should probably spread ourselves out more.
IzumiBe careful so that you don’t go to the inside too much.
Homare-san, I think that being here on this end of the stage will create a better mood!
TsumugiDirector, watch out!
Izumi!?
Hisoka――
…Be careful.
IzumiT-thank you, Hisoka-san.
HomareI couldn’t see your movements for a moment.
TasukuAre you a ninja?
Anyway, we’re still at the Mankai theater. The stage doesn’t extend that far, Director.
IzumiI-I’m sorry…! I didn’t mean to!
TsumugiPlease be careful.
HomareWe have wings, so it would be convenient if we could fly.
IzumiThat’s true!
TsumugiPlease don’t be ridiculous.
TasukuThere’d be no point in having a stage.
AzumaHehe. It’d be interesting if we could do it though.
Hisoka…Let’s ask Yuki.
IzumiI wonder if he’d be able to make a contraption like that though!?
Tasuku…It might work if we use wires.
TsumugiAre you serious?
IzumiAhaha. It’ll be interesting if we use that kind of staging next time!
HomareIf we are to fly using wires, then why don’t we do a story about a butterfly next? I shall be a swallowtail butterfly.
Hisoka…A wing series.
TasukuThey’d call us the Wing Troupe.[3]
Hisoka…Heh.
Izumi!!
HomareHisoka-kun laughed!
AzumaIt’s my first time seeing it.
TsumugiThat’s true!
TasukuWhat did he even find funny?
AzumaWasn’t it the Wing Troupe?
TasukuSo stupid.
HomareThe mysterious Hisoka-kun’s sense of humour is also mysterious!
IzumiWhat an acceptably unacceptable explanation!?
HisokaHehe.
AzumaAhaha.
TsumugiAhaha.
HomareHahahah.
TasukuHaha… geez.
IzumiAhaha.
(I didn’t think there would be a point where the Winter Troupe can laugh together like this.)
(It took quite some time for them to open their hearts, but I’m really glad…)
Tasuku…You’re still here? I was just thinking that you’re not back at the dorm yet.
TsumugiSomehow, I just don’t want to be apart from here. I always loved this mood, where it feels like the never-ending moments before a cultural festival.[4]

TasukuA cultural festival, you say… We’re not kids.
TsumugiI also get sad when I think that I’ll be parting ways with Michael tomorrow.
TasukuYeah… But we’ll be able to do new roles after this.
TsumugiBut before that, we have to beat GOD-za first. Or else we’ll have to disband.
TasukuNow that you mention it… I have nowhere else to go if I have to leave this place. I gotta think of something.
TsumugiEven if that isn’t the case, I want to keep going with this Winter Troupe. With this Winter Troupe together with you, Taa-chan.
Tasuku…Tsumu, stop calling me Taa-chan.
TsumugiYou too, stop calling me Tsumu.
TasukuWe’ll definitely win tomorrow.
TsumugiYeah.

  1. Literally, “you have a strict attitude where you take things seriously without trying to satisfy” – If i interpreted “満足しようとせずに” correctly
  2. THANK YOU SO MUCH SHIROI for helping me with this line! Words can’t express how much I want to strangle this line if it were a person (from a translating perspective). It’s a pretty liberal translation but it still preserves what Tasuku wants to say. As for the title, I translated it literally
  3. I honestly wanted to translate this to Wingter Troupe
  4. I think Tsumugi is saying that he wants to stay in the “before” phase of a cultural festival because he doesn’t want the festival to start & eventually come to an end
