Misheard, Misunderstood Nankin Tamasudare[1]

Backstage Stories
IzumiI’m sorry for making you carry a lot of stuff. But it’s great we were able to buy a lot of eggs!
SakyoThe egg is discounted to 99 yen but you can only buy one pack per person. It’s better if two people would buy it.
We would normally spend more money buying them, yadda yadda –.
Izumi(As expected of MANKAI Dorms’ minister of finance)
Speaking of, Sakyo-san, have you decided the two participants for Autumn Troupe?
SakyoYeah, it’s Nanao and Fushimi duo.
IzumiIt seems interesting because of their height differences. Are planning to perform anything too?
SakyoNot sure… I’m still thinking about it.
Passer-byWow, their technique is amazing!
IzumiI wonder what is it? There’s so many people gathering over there.
SakyoStreet act…? No, rather it’s a street performance.
IzumiIf you don’t mind, let’s go and check it?
SakyoWell, we still have time. Maybe we can watch a little.
Performer AWell well, check out this empty hat …there, a rabbit!
Performer BI am going to play harmonica with my nose and the recorder with my mouth.
Performer CI can create anything with balloons. Anyone has requests?
IzumiThere are various kinds of performances.
Performer D“Hurry, hurry, hurry hurry hurry hurry, it’s the Nankin Tamasudare!”
IzumiWow, they’re performing Nankin Tamasudare. It’s more powerful and amazing in person.
SakyoNankin Tamasudare…
IzumiSakyo-san, what’s wrong?
Sakyo…No, it’s nothing. Let’s go home.
Sakyo The Golden Flower Blooming Wild 1-01.jpeg
SakyoIt’s no good. I have to extend it a little bit more.
GuyAmazing, what did you do just now?
SakyoAh, Guy.
GuyIs it going to be your entry for the talent competition?
SakyoThat’s right. It is called, Nankin Tamasudare.
GuyI see.
SakyoHave you decided what to do?
GuyNot yet. At first, I thought I would break some tiles but when I consulted Citronia, he told me it wasn’t interesting.
Instead, he recommended to eat scalding hot oden while smiling.
Sakyo…. I can’t imagine it. Though, it certainly sounds interesting.
GuyYou think so? Then, I’ll consider it for my performance. I’m sorry to get in the way of your practice.
SakyoI don’t mind at all. Do your best.
GuyYeah.
GuyFuruichi’s performance is called ”Gyan Gyan su shōyu tare“[2] or something. I’ve never heard of it before but it seems like a traditional Japanese performance?
Sakyo The Golden Flower Blooming Wild 1-02.jpeg
CitronAh–heigh-ho~! Darling cannon ball, abundance, home run~ ♪ ♪[3]
SakyoThe hell are you singing?
CitronSakyo, good work.
SakyoGeez, can you at least keep quiet when taking a bath?
CitronOh ! Sorry, sorry !
SakyoFuu…
CitronIt’s difficult to prepare for the talent show, right? I told Guy to perform a great trick.
SakyoWell, it’s not easy and practice is absolutely necessary.
CitronOh– ! I can’t afford to lose either. The only way to beat you is to show off my beautiful voice !
I’m going to practice singing right away! Darling mayhem, are you in distress? Hi-Hi ~! ♪ ♪
SakyoI said, shut your mugs!
Sakyo(Should I practice in the courtyard today?)

IzumiThe trick seems amazing. Did you have a hard time practicing?
SakyoI would say it’s not that easy but it’s not that bad.

SakyoHuh?
TsuzuruWhat is that?
SakuyaI can finally see it!
CitronI am thrilled ~!
SakyoWait! What the hell is “Nanbandzu tamakorogashi”?
KazunariEhh? Am I mistaken?
KumonI told you, it’s “Yo dare korogashi”![5]
MisumiEh? Isn’t it “Naniken Yokosare”?[6]
MukuI heard it’s “Nantare su shōyu”.[7]
SakyoWhat does that even mean?
ChikageHaha, I knew it. It’s “Nankin Tamasudare”.
SakyoUtsuki… If you knew something, just say so.
ChikageMy bad. It was fun to watch.
GuyCould it be that I started all of these?[8] I’m sorry.
KazunariHey, hey, Frooch-san. Spill it, what’s the correct answer?
SakyoSigh…. None of you are correct~!

Notes

  1. Nankin Tamasudare or “南京玉簾” is a traditional Japanese street performance performed using a woven screen (the one Sakyo is holding in his unbloomed card). The word can also mean a kind of flower. ::; I was torn between using Nankin Lily which leans towards the flower, because of the event’s theme “flower garden”, or Nankin Tamasudare, leaning to the street performance... Since the card referenced it, I opted for the latter.
  2. ギャンギャン酢醤油タレ” (Gyan Gyan su shōyu tare). Gyan-gyan is an onomatopeia meaning to ‘yell or cry loudly’, and su shōyu means vinegar soy sauce.
  3. Tried to search for the song Citron is singing but couldn’t find it. It is possible that he’s just throwing random words into the song or his lyrics is wrong all over ^^;;
  4. 南蛮漬玉転がし (Nanban-dzuke tamakorogashi) - Nanban-dzuke is a type of Japanese fish dish, while tamakorogashi means playing while rolling balls.
  5. よだれ転がし (Yodare Korogashi) - Yodare means saliva/drool, while korogashi means rolling.
  6. 何県よっこらせ (Naniken Yokosare) - Nani ken means “what prefecture”, while yokosare is not really considered as a word? It’s an expression like “oopsie daisy” or heave-ho.
  7. ナンタレ酢醤油 (Nantare su shōyu) - While Nantare is in katakana here, it is likely a shortened reference to the Japanese sauce brand なんでもごたれ (Nandemo go tare), while su shoyu means “vinegar soy sauce”.
  8. I just opted to keep the romaji itself so that it would somehow sync with the title. Also…some word combinations are so random that it’s almost impossible to rhyme them :; (lmao makes sense why the title is "Misheard, Misunderstood Nankin Tamasudare" xD)
